Amidst the background sounds of office workers busily typing at their computers, Sleep In Office launches to reveal a young, blonde-haired man as seen from behind. He is working diligently, and players can look over his shoulder at his computer screen. Instantly, he folds his arms on his desk, lowers his head, and starts to sleep. In a short while, the boss, balding and overweight, walks quickly past the young man’s desk. The challenge of the game is to touch and hold the red wake up button before the boss notices the errant employee.

However, the sleep deprivation thermometer starts running down as long as the button is held. After approximately 5 seconds, the young man can no longer remain awake and he falls asleep, despite the wake up button. Achieving high scores requires players to hit the button as fast as they can when necessary, and they must also release the button as soon as the boss has passed and it is safe, which brings the thermometer back to the top.

The cat and mouse game in Sleep In Office is made funny and unpredictable by the behavior of the grouchy boss. Sometimes he will walk by quickly, but sometimes he will walk by quickly and unexpectedly pause before walking offscreen. Intent on catching shirkers, he tries to surprise workers, peeking out from behind furniture, dropping down from the ceiling, quickly reversing direction, and patrolling the office riding a Segway Scooter.
